Is there a way to identify the original reference for this? I thought it was in the 5e DMG but couldn't find it.

Never mind. I think I found the source. (Correct me if I'm wrong) It seems to be from "Ultimate Ships 5E" (https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/239871/Ultimate-Ships-5E) as well as "Pirate Campaign Compendium (5E)"
