Shield Companion errata?

The original shield companion https://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/s/shield-companion/ calls out that other than being lower level and only affecting companions/familiars, it is identical to Shield Other.  Shield Other requires two platinum rings, worn by the caster and target, as a focus.   Animal companions/familiars, almost as a rule, cannot wear rings.

Is there errata that makes this spell useful for anything other than monkeyish ACs/familiars that have ring slots?

  • Isn't that just a DM call? I mean, I'd allow a piercing, an anklet, a collar/necklace,... whatever. As long as the player wasn't trying to be a munchkin and add additional magical "bling" to their companion, what's the harm?
